INFORMATION: I was part of the RAF Bicester Bomb Disposal
Flight that did a clearance job in the old bomb dump here in
1965. Gravel extraction
was under way and wartime munitions kept turning up so we were
called in and spent most of the summer there. An old pond within
the BD area provided a few tons of assorted munitions. We pumped
the pond empty but there was around 3 feet of mud left so we used
a bit of kit that had lain in the store for years unused. The Millers
sludge pump. This single cylinder engine powered unit had a rocking
beam that operated a large rubber diaphragm pump that was capable
of sucking up and squirting out half bricks so it had no trouble
with 20mm ammo! Peter Hamlin
