This is the plan from the memorial plaque. As you see it was a very extensive airfield. It started life in 1941 like RAF Charlton Horethorne and and I think RAF Winkleigh. Later it was decided to make it into a full heavy airfield for transport and bomber. Units came and went, the Americans stationed B17's for a while and by D-day had Lightning's flying interdiction sorties over France. Gliders were assembled and flown out. The Airborne used it for a while. Any way all this can be found in many books but they all fail to say what was on the ground.
