There are several types of RAF stop butts, this one is for testing fighter planes cannon and machine guns. It would have been roofed over and the middle filled with sand to catch and slow the bullets down. The air mechanics could then harmonies the guns to a point in front of the plane to hit an opponent at say 200 yards.
