INFORMATION:
A small dispersed camp picket post at the entrance.
History: The land for a training station was acquired 1 July 1939 and work started on a four runway layout. With the outbreak of war the site was occupied before completion. The airfield was brought into commission as HMS Heron on 18 June 1940. By 1941 most of the 12 Bellman hangers had been completed and the large areas of Nissen and temporary brick domestic accommodation expanded. More dispersal areas were provided on land at Manor Farm, Speckington Farm and land at Bridgehampton and Podimore. Seven Mains hangers were built at these locations.
