The Luftwaffe started development of rocket weapons. Officially designated the F2G-76, Goebbels the German propaganda minister named the rocket the V1, (V for vergeltungwaffe- reprisal weapon). It was 8 meters long and was a streamlined pilot less flying bomb with a pulse or ramjet engine fuelled by gasoline and compressed air. It was launched from ski-jump style ramps and carried a one ton warhead at 550 kph (350mph) with a maximum range of 400 kilometres (250 miles) using an automatic guidance system before crashing.
