Quite a large bunker semi sunk into the ground.

I am surprised they have not built on top of it?

R610
The Tobruk defence.
This is the only outward defence the bunker has, the machine-gun could fire 360degrees and also as an anti-aircraft gun, so very useful all around. Also either through a speaking tube or a field telephone the soldier in the Tobruk could spot for mortar fire and be the eyes of the bunkers crew.

Close combat defence.
This is a close combat embrasure and rear entrance of a bunker at Varde in Brittany but it gives the idea of what is there.
The view past an entrance door along a trench out of the bunker showing the gunners view from the embrasure.

R501
Another R501 group shelter. This one has been sunk in more than the last R501 presumably because it is in a more vulnerable position.
Plan of an R501.Entrance & gas lock and crew room with a small close combat embrasure covering the rear door from the crew room.
Close combat window defence.
422po1 close combat window of the type that may have been used here.
